About Stay or Pay Laws

Stay or Pay Laws follows the state laws on stay-or-pay clauses: contract terms that make a worker repay training, a sign-on bonus, relocation money or tuition for leaving a job before a set date. It is written for the people asked to sign them or sent the bill, not for the employers who write them.

Most of what is written about these laws comes from law firms advising employers, and the dates don't always agree: New York's start date was reported as both December 19, 2026 and February 13, 2027. So we read each law in the legislature's own text and the enforcing agency's own page, link to them, date every fact, and look again every week.

We are independent. We aren't a law firm, a government agency or an employer, and none of them pays for what we write. Nothing here is legal advice: for your own contract, a lawyer or your state's labor department can tell you where you stand.

How we work

Every figure on this site comes from a source we link to: the maker, the regulator, the government or published research or reviews. We check pages regularly, and each page shows the date it was last updated. If you spot something wrong or out of date, email hello@stayorpaylaws.com and we'll fix it.

We don't accept payment to change what we say about a product, and we never claim to have tested something we haven't.
